Denise Bettelyoun
Denise Bettelyoun is an Artist, Radical Knitter, Critical Crafter, Textile-Activist, Doctorate, Lecturer and Curator located on the Swabian Alp near Stuttgart/ Germany.
Her art combines hands-on practical manual skills in the textile and artistic field, with indepth scientific research and knowledge. While questioning established conceivabilities about textiles in society in her work, she uncovers and approximates the enormous span of creative possibilities of her media in the freed space of art.
In her view, textiles are supercharged, extrovert social surfaces that communicate information about identity, uniformity, gender, status, age, cultural background and religion (amongst other) to the outer world - while at the same time introvert, by being closely connected to our bodies´ needs, feelings and sensations.
Working with textiles trains senses and aesthetic abilities, mathematical and structural understanding, discipline and dexterity, a feeling for rhythm and color, while deepening practical manual skills, knowledge and understanding of the connection of nature, technicality and creation. Denise Bettelyoun deeply understands these multiple layers of the textile media in art and lets this knowledge flow into her body of work clearly transcending limitations based on traditional and cultural established perceptions. In this sense, her artwork is subversive and radical.
